Liverpool has been defeated in its first match of the season by West Bromwich Albion. West Brom literally thrashed Liverpool and won the match by 3-0. The skipper of Liverpool, Steven Gerrard, is shocked by this defeat. Gerrard said that he had expected the team to dominate West Brom throughout the match, but, the players didn’t apply themselves enough on the field and he is thoroughly disappointed to start the season on such a bad note.
This was the first match of Brendan Rodgers as the Liverpool manager. After Liverpool’s poor performance in the previous season, Rodgers has replaced Kanny Dalgish as the manager of the club. The owners have massive hopes with Rodgers, but, he didn’t manage to start his tenure at Liverpool on a good note. The Liverpool players looked completely out of touch in the match. They kept giving easy opportunities to the Brom players. Zoltan Gera scored the first goal of the match towards the end of the first half. He put the ball into the goalpost with a fantastic volley from a distance of 25 yards.
Brom got a penalty in the 64th minute of the match and Peter Odemwingie doubled the lead of the team by putting the ball into the left hand corner of the goal post with a fantastic shot. Thereafter, it was very tough for Liverpool to come back into the match. In the 77th minute, Romelu Lukaku made the score 3-0 by capitalizing on the cross of Liam Ridgewell. Lukaku deflected the ball into the goal post with a brilliant header. After that, there were only formalities left in the game. Brom maintained its 3-0 lead till the end of the match and pulled off an upset.
However, Gerrard said that the players should not panic after just one defeat. This is just the start of the season and there is still a long way to go.
